Eriocyse senilis
Sometimes listed as Neoporteria nidus senilis, this has always been one of my favorite plants, especially when it sports it beautiful, bright red flowers. There'll be some very nice specimens of this plant at the OCSS Show and Sale...which is coming up in a couple of weeks, July 15-17, at Portland Nursery on Stark, in Southeast Portland, Oregon.

x Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness'
No one seems to know who created this cross, but it's a classic. It's an intergeneric cross between an Aloe and a Gasteria, probably Aloe aristata and Gasteria 'Little Warty'.
We are busy preparing plants for the Oregon Cactus & Succulent Society Show & Sale, July 17-19 at Portland Nursery, 5050 SE Stark St. in Portland. If you're in the area, be sure to show up.

Gymnocalycium pflanzii var. lagunillasense
Gymnocalyciums are real gems of the cactus world: easy to grow, easy to get to flower, and they make very nice specimens in a relatively short while.
The variety name is no longer accepted by botanists. It's simply G. pflantzii. I just throw in that nice long variety name as a teaser. And it's fun.
For those of you in the Portland, Oregon area...hold those dates: July 18, 19 & 20. Those are the dates for the Oregon Cactus & Succulent Society Summer Show and Sale. Check it out here, and I hope to see you there.

Summer Show & Sale July 20-22
Our second show and sale of the Oregon Cactus and Succulent Society is coming up fast. This one will be at least twice the size of the last one, with a huge selection of plants. Plus, there will be an interesting Expo table of weird, but wonderful, succulent plants. Come and let your imagination run wild. This is the summer event where weird is not only permitted, it's encouraged! I'm talking about plants of course, but if you want to include yourself in that category, go for it!
The hours are 9-7 Friday and Saturday, and 9-4 on Sunday. Hope to see some of you there!!!

Echeveria pulidonis 'Red Edge'
Though our nursery list says we're out of stock on this plant, we'll be putting them back up as back in stock in a day or two. They're very popular and we have a hard time keeping them in stock. It's one of the forms of Echeveria pulidonis.
It's hard to imagine that the July cactus society show and sale is only a couple of weeks away. Back to potting up more plants, etc. Volunteers, anyone?

Sale Pictures
No photo from me tonight, but there's some nice pictures from the sale posted at the DangerGarden Blog . Check it out. You might even get a distant shot of me there. It was a lot of work but also a lot of fun. And the one in July should be even better. Plan for it now: July 15, 16 & 17 at the Portland nursery at 5050 SE Stark St. in Portland. Hope to see some of you there.
In the meantime, check out some of those other cactus & succulent blogs from around the world. I'll be adding more to my blog roll soon.

Final Preparations for Plant Sale
Tomorrow's the day when all these plants get packed off to the sale site, and this is just a very small sampling of the plants we'll be taking. We're not the only vendor. On Friday, when it all begins, I'll be at the site from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and also on Saturday. Then we get a short day on Sunday - 8 am to 5 pm - with me taking a break in late morning to officiate at my church, substituting for the pastor who will be out of town.
In other words, I don't think I'll be posting anything for a few day. In the meantime...

Mammillaria zielmanniana
While I was preparing plants for the sale this weekend I was again impressed by the variation in flower color with Mammillaria zeilmanniana. As an example, observe the following four plants I potted up today. They're all M. zeilmanniana, but what a difference.
Some botanists now place this with in M. crinita, but when you've been around these plants for as many years as we have, it's kind of hard to change.
A warm welcome to those of you who are new to the blog. In general, I keep the talk at a minimum and let the photos do their thing. But I welcome your comments and feedback. Once in a while, when I'm more awake, I may go into the background of a particular plant. But mainly, I hope you enjoy the images.
Lynn-Marie (my wife) and I co-own a small succulent nursery and the blog is a part of that. But though we would love to have you check out our nursery, the purpose of the blog is not to sell plants but to increase interest in and enjoyment of these fascinating plants.

Rebutia krainziana
Rebutia krainziana is cooperating for the sale this coming weekend. They're putting on quite the performance, and they should still be blooming this weekend.
I know that many have reduced this to a variety or a subspecies but I don't even remember what species they placed it under. But, though I try to keep up, I don't claim to be a botanist or a taxonomist...just a grower of plants we've always been fascinated with.
