Echinocereus flower

It warmed up today and that brought out the flowers. This particular Echinocereus came to us unlabeled but it appears to be aff. scheeri. It flowers dependably every year.
Thanks to those who showed up at the workshop/class at Portland Nursery today. There was a good turnout and it was a lot of fun.

Growing Weird Plants: Cactus and Succulents

That's the name of the workshop I'll be leading at Portland Nursery this Saturday. We'll begin at 1 pm at the Stark Street location, 5050 SE Stark. They do have a sign up thingy on their website (and it looks better if you do sign up), but it's not required. I'd love to see some of you there.

Fat Plants 2012

Roxanne, one of the members of the Oregon Cactus & Succulent Society, welcoming people to Fat Plants 2012 this past weekend. The weather cooperated and a good number of people showed up. If you were among those who were there, we thank you and hope you'll return for the July event, July 20-22, at the Stark Street location of Portland Nursery.
Thanks to all of you who helped out in one way or another.
Back with more plant pictures tomorrow.

Aloe thorns

This Aloe certainly has gotten the idea of thorny down pretty good. Thorns everywhere. But these aren't "bad" thorns. They aren't like the spines on an Opuntia or the point on the end of an Agave leaf. There's beauty here, but it's a tough and rough beauty...
If you're in the Portland area later today, Saturday, come on over to the Portland Nursery on Stark Street (5050 SE Stark) at 1 pm, where I'll be leading a workshop titled: "Weird Plants: Growing Succulent Plants 101". Hope I'll see some of you there.

OCSS Summer Show and Sale II

We'll be going here and there getting ready for the second show & sale of the summer which is taking place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Portland Nursery, 5050 SE Stark St. in Portland. Hours: 9-7, Friday and Saturday; 9-5 on Sunday.

It appears there will be 5 different venders this time, offering the largest selection of cacti and succulents offered in the Portland area during the year. We'll be there with many more plants than in June and I'm sure there will be something for just about everyone.

As was the case last time, I'll probably be too exhausted to blog when I get home each day, but I'll try.

And to close off the night, here's a picture of the flower of Aeonium pseudotabulaeforme. Back at you as soon as possible.

Another Cactus Sale

The second summer Show & Sale of the Oregon Cactus & Succulent Society (OCSS) is coming up this coming weekend, July 16, 17 and 18. This time it's at the Portland Nursery on Stark St. (5050 SE Stark) in Portland, 9 am - 7 pm Friday and Saturday and 9 am - 5 pm on Sunday. Come on out and join the fun.

And a special "thank you" to those of you who showed up at the seminar on Sunday. There were 15 in attendance and I hope it was a good experience for all.
Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubrispinus was blooming today but I didn't have the time to get a picture, so we'll just have to do with this one from the archives.

Enjoy your plants.

"Keys to Growing Outstanding Succulents" at Portland Nursery

Just a reminder that on Sunday at 1:00 pm, I'll be giving a presentation titled Keys to Growing Outstanding Succulents at the Stark Street Portland Nursery. You can register for the seminar at
        http://www.portlandnursery.com/events/index.shtml
and, yes, I checked and the sign-up sheet is now working. They still don't have my name spelled right, but hey, one thing at a time. If you're in the Portland area, I'd love to have you in the audience. We'll be under the white tent straight in from the entrance.

Oh, and if you just happen to walk in to the nursery without registering...you'll be in good company. Just drop by and add your two bits.  See you then!

Oregon Cactus & Succulent Society Show and Sale

Haven't had much time to do much photography lately. I haven't even felt like it.  May was the third rainiest May on record and it was pouring for the last couple of days...until today, when it suddenly decided to be summer for a day! Had to get the lawn mowed quickly, before the rain returns tomorrow. Yuk.

All the more reason to set aside these days: June 18, 19 and 20. Those are the days for the first summer Show and Sale of the Oregon Cactus & Succulent Society. Where? Portland Nursery on SE Division. We'll be under the big awning on the new parking lot. We'll be there. NW Cactus & Succulents will be there. And at least one other private vendor will be there. 15% of the sales goes to support the activities of the society. So, if you're in the vicinity, drop on buy (oops! I meant to say "by", but "buy" works too!). We'd love to see you. And if you want to fly in from a farther away, that's OK too :)

Hopefully, it won't be raining then. Some places pray for rain. We pray for sun!
