x Gasteraloe 'Royal Highness'

No one seems to know who created this cross, but it's a classic. It's an intergeneric cross between an Aloe and a Gasteria, probably Aloe aristata and Gasteria 'Little Warty'.

Aloe 'Rocco'

We received this plant under this name but have not found it elsewhere. It appears to be one of the Kelly Griffin hybrids.

Aloe 'Christmas Carol'

As far as I'm concerned this is one of the most outstanding Aloe cultivars produced in recent years. Wow!

Miscellaneous Succulent Plants

These are some of the plants which stay in our back yard during the summer: Cyphostemma juttae on the left and, beginning in the front, an Aloe, followed by large Crassula ovata 'Gollum' and two large plants of variegated Euphorbia ammak (Euphorbia erythreae variegate) 

Aloe 'Hey Babe'

A complex hybrid (Aloe descoingsii x [A. bakeri x A. parvula] ) created by John Bleck, 'Hey Babe' has orange flowers and clumps readily in a medium sized pot.

Aloe 'Walmsley's Bronze'

A small-growing plant, it's nevertheless quite colorful!

Aloe 'Latte'

The color on the aloe hybrids is absolutely wonderful at this time of year.

Aloe nobilis variegate

Tonight's images are closeups of the aloe - Aloe nobilis variegate. This variegated succulent isn't terribly rare, but it's certainly impressive. It's one I would want in any collection.

Gasteria and Aloe variegates

A couple of gasterias and an aloe variegate form a border for a Fockea in the background. I'll post closeups of the variegates in the next day or so.

Aloe 'Christmas Carol'

This small growing Kelly Griffin hybrid is one gorgeous plant and it's showing off in all its splendor right now. The red flower against the red edged 6 inch leaves makes for a very striking image.

A Melange of Aloe Cultivars

It's more like a tangled web of aloes, thought the picture makes it look more tangled than it is. This is just a small view across some of the aloe trays with the sun shining through the leaves.

As always, one of those plants which catches your eye.

Aloe 'Christmas Carol'

For us, the Christmas Carols are at their most flamboyant at this time of year. One of my favorites of the Griffin hybrids.

Aloe 'Pink Blush'

 

'Pink Blush' is understandably one of the most popular of the Kelly Griffin hybrids. Quite easy to grow and get to flourish, it just keeps getting more and more impressive as it ages.

Aloe 'Brass Hat'

This is an excellent Aloe for growing in small containers...and with bright sun, it becomes more bronze. You can tell from the photo that we haven't had our "bright sun" season yet. We're still waiting.

'Brass Hat' isn't one of those new introductions which are all the rage; many of them are outstanding and we grow them as well. It is sometimes listed as an Ed Hummel hybrid (grower and creator of many hybrids in the 1960s; Hummel's Exotic Gardens, Carlsbad, California) who created and multiplied many succulent hybrids the old fashioned way. However, it's actually a hybrid created another well known hybridizer, John Bleck. We even know it's heritage: (Aloe haworthioides x Aloe bakeri) X ((Aloe descoingsii x Aloe calcairophila (basically Aloe 'Pepe') X again to Aloe bakeri). There, all you ever wanted to know. Any way, we have just recently added it to our collection and will be adding it to our sales list soon.

Aloe 'Blue Elf'

Aloe 'Blue Elf' is a compact, vigorous grower and is cold hardy to around 20F. These young plants will rapidly grow into an impressive potted plant or, where the weather permits, can even be used as a landscaping ground cover. Like most Aloes, the flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds and occur primarily during the winter. It appears to be one of Edward C. Hummel's hybrids.

Aloe deltoideodonta var. candicans

You'd think that after 40 some years of growing succulent plants I'd get a little tired of them. True, some of the "old timers" sometimes become boring, but I usually get over it and I get fascinated all over again by what first caught my attention: the amazing diversity of form. How can you not be enthralled with the almost unbelievable beauty of a plant like this? Wow!

Aloe 'Kelly Blue'

This may be the same as Aloe 'Vinnie. At any rate, it's a Kelly Griffin hybrid and they're blooming like mad right now. The plant itself is outstanding, but the flower...wow! We don't have may flowers right now so these really stand out.

 

Aloe bakeri

A quick post tonight on Christmas Eve, a photo taken by Lynn-Marie the other day of the flower of Aloe bakeri. It and another narrow leaved Aloe, A. albiflora, are blooming right next to each other in the greenhouse, a veritable forest of small "grass" aloes.

It's now time for this old Santa to hit the sack, 'cause there are a lot of packages to be wrapped in the early morning. Hope you have a wonderful day. Back at you next week. Peace!

Aloe deltoideonta var. candicans

I've posted this plant before but Lynn-Marie took a new photo. It's a really cool Aloe in my opinion...and, besides, they've been growing nicely.
