Lithops optica 'Rubra'

A long time ago I posted a photo of a couple of Lithops optica 'Rubra' seedlings. They've grown up a bit.

The color isn't quite right, but you get the picture. Lithops are such fun plants. People often tell me that they're just too hard to grow. Well, they can be a challenge for a beginner - and sometimes even for a seasoned grower. I tell people they're probably going to kill one or two before they catch on, but it's worth the effort. Haven't grown them before? Try them; you just may fall in love with them.

  1. just compared them with the old pictures, and they've really grown a lot! the color is a dream :)

it is so true. my mom couldn't understand my fascination with lithops before. but while I'm away, she had to care for them. it's been a year and now she's asking if she can keep a pot or two ;)

  2. Optica rubra grown from seeds? Wow! Congratulations! They look strong and healthy.

I've been hooked on cultivating Lithops since I first saw them in a botanical garden here in Muenster, Germany - almost four years ago. At first I thought the gardeners had just left a space for some other plants and just put out some pebbles... and then I saw that some of these pebbles were flowering. And that was it. There will be no return to life without Lithops. ;-)

I've also convinced (or rather: infected) quite a few people at green-24.de since I grow Lithops and frequently show pictures.
Apparently seeing pictures and having someone who makes all the mistakes first really encourages people to try growing extraordinary plants, too.
