Notocactus buiningii part 2

Here are the more recent photos of the Notocactus buiningii flowers. (We know that the consensus position is that this is now a Parodia, but for some of us - and with regard to specific plants - old habits are hard to break.)

Personal Update and Notocactus (Parodia) buiningii

Between having my tooth worked on - not my favorite activity - and changing things over to our new old used car, we haven't had much time for anything else. Our old 1997 Ford Aerostar van had over 230,000 miles on it and several things which needed work, so we're going backward to a 1995 Ford Aerostar van with under 120,000 miles on it. We'll then initiate it with our drive to Arizona & Southern California, leaving the nursery and animals in the hands of our son, Naiche. Of course we take our two dogs with us and then cram the car full of succulent plants from a variety of wholesale nurseries - about 14 or so in less than two weeks. But due to the tooth problems, we'll delay our trip by a week. So...a couple of photos of Notocactus (Parodia) buiningii:

Echeveria 'Super Star'

Mammillaria schwarzii starts

Over the years one of the most common questions about cacti is "Doesn't it take a long time before they flower?" And of course the answer depends a lot on which cactus. This, for example, is Mammillaria schwarzii and each of these little starts is under 1 inch in diameter. Questions answered.

This is our confabulation of weird old men (Cephalocereus senilis crests). Like most of us, they're a little twisted with age!

Greenhouse Tour V

Just another area of the main greenhouse.  Don't get too bored. I won't be posting much over the Easter weekend.

Went to the endodontist today (specialist for dental root canal surgery) and determined that the tooth which has been giving my a headache won't be a good candidate for root canal so it'll probably end up being pulled. And that's probably more than you ever wanted to know :] (It's more than I wanted to know!)

Greenhouse Tour IV

Another bench with mostly haworthias. Not a very exciting view but if you get "down, dirty and personal" with the plants, it can be quite fascinating. Like I say, always keep a magnifying glass handy!

The weather forecasters are all in a tizzy about a windy, late winter storm which should hit us tomorrow. It's already bringing heavy snow to the mountains and tomorrow should bring 80 mph gusts to the coast and 50 mph gusts to us. We can and do get some pretty wicked storms through here every couple of decades (in my lifetime, there have been two, neither of hurricane strength). My guess, however, is that the bluster on the TV news programs will be the strongest gusts we'll get. If I'm wrong, I'll confess tomorrow.
