Rebutia krainziana normal and crested

It's hard to believe these two plants are the same species, but they are. They're both Rebutia krainziana (syn.: R. marsoneri 'krainziana'), but the second is a large old crest of the same. If you didn't know what it was to begin with, the flower would be the only possible clue.

Three closeup photos tonight of the flowers of three different cacti: Rebutia narvaecense, Rebutia krainziana and Mammillaria zeilmanniana.

 

 

The rest of the country has been sweltering under recording breaking temperatures for over a month, while we've been cooler (and drier) than normal. Yesterday broke that string, breaking the record high for the day with a temperature of 103F. It cooled into the 90s F today, and should be in the 80s for the rest of the week. Whew!

Rebutia krainziana

Rebutia krainziana is cooperating for the sale this coming weekend. They're putting on quite the performance, and they should still be blooming this weekend.

I know that many have reduced this to a variety or a subspecies but I don't even remember what species they placed it under. But, though I try to keep up, I don't claim to be a botanist or a taxonomist...just a grower of plants we've always been fascinated with.

Rebutia krainziana

There's a reason we chose this plant for our nursery logo. The flowers are totally dependable and absolutely fantastic...in my humble opinion. For example, this was today. One plant is producing all these flowers.

I know, it's not considered a valid name anymore by some. It's been subsumed under Rebutia marsoneri. But I still call it by it's old name...and it comes!
