Because we have so many different succulent plants around our house and nursery, we've never really had room for a lot of very big plants. Some of the larger pachypodiums are a case in point. But this is another matter, as it's a dwarf, staying quite small. It can be difficult to grow on its own roots and is especially sensitive to cold and wet conditions. On the other hand, it doesn't really like to have its roots totally dry out. But the challenge is worth it for these unique little beauties.

I just haven't had time to do any photography lately. So, from the archives, way back in 2004, comes these photos of Pachypodium lealii var. saundersii. Beware! Pachypodiums can be addictive! Especially with flowers like these.

 

Pachypodium lamerei

This is the most common of the Pachypodiums, Pachypodium lamerei, commonly called the Madagascar Palm, though - of course - it's not a palm. There's a reason it's more common: It's quite easy to grow. That's a plus, not a negative. Sure, there are some more interesting Pachypodiums, but some of them are a bit of a challenge - at least in our climate.

But, of course, we like a challenge; but not everyone does. These are just the plant for you, perfect for your deck or porch during the warmer months, and doesn't particularly object to a dry treatment during the colder months.
