Aeonium haworthii

 

In areas where this can be grown as a landscape plant, such as along the California coast, it's used extensively for that purpose...so much so that it's become one of those plants which people just give to each other as cuttings. And because of this, nurseries don't seem to carry it.

But, in our less hospitable climates, it's also a wonderful potted specimen. In the right place, it's a cool companion plant to the ever-present Jade.

Aichryson tortuosum

An easy plant to grow, Aichryson tortuosum is a winter grower, putting out plentiful flowers in late spring. Make that early summer in our climate. Native to the Canary Islands, it's sometimes listed as an Aeonium or even a Sempervivum. It's not hardy.

This is a plant which is commonly available; it's not exactly rare! Mislabeled, yes; rare, not! But common or not, it's a great little plant. At least we've always liked it. It's easy to grow and makes a nice little addition to succulent bonsai dishes. Give it enough light or it will not look its best and if it begins to droop over...guess what? Give it some water. Though dormant in the summer, it likes to get some water year around.

Aeonium sedifolium

From the Canary Islands, this small-growing Aeonium gets its species name from the resemblance to Sedum leaves. Grows up the 40 cm. tall in nature, with fat little leaves which are less than 1.2 cm long and often marked with red lines.

I've come to really like these crests. They're quite easy to grow and each one is unique in its character. When the occasional "normal" offset happens, it's easily removed and rooted for the normal A. 'Sunburst', an outstanding plant in itself.

The weather was lovely today and I was able to get a fair amount of "heavy lifting" work done. I'll be restricted regarding lifting for six weeks following surgery on Friday, so got to get some things done up front.

Aeonium 'White Fringe'

We first purchased this plant (actually, its ancestors) about 40 years ago and this is the name it had. I haven't been able to find such a name in the literature since then. But it's a neat plant. It doesn't get very large and is easy to grow. But it has one other characteristic which gives it a certain degree of uniqueness: Its leaves are sticky. Quite sticky. Obviously we like it or we wouldn't have had it around for 40 years!

We have an eventful weekend coming up. We're going back to the Oregon State Fair again, this time to watch the Peruvian Paso Horses. Then on Monday (Labor Day in the U.S.) we're going to a horse ranch in Northern Idaho. I'll still try to get a few posts up.
