Another face of 'Gold Bug'

 

I've really come to like this heuffelii. I know...I've had this one up before...several times! Yes. But, in defense, these are new pictures taken today, on our first day in the upper 70s F...That's about 25 C, for those of us who spent all our lives the old fashioned way. Its full name, if you don't have it memorized by now, is Jovibarba heuffelii 'Gold Bug'.

I've posted this before but the picture was taken at a different time of year, when the plant had more green. This plant has been totally exposed to the elements all Winter and shows it's other face, with much more red and very little green. The yellow will also become more prominent.

These plants- Jovibarba heuffelii - are similar to echeverias and are grown in a similar manner. There are three accepted species within the genus Jovibarba and heuffelii is the one which doesn't produce babies in the same manner as the rest of  the semps and Jovibarbas. In this case, division requires that the plantlets be cut apart with a clean, sharp knife.

This is the cultivar 'Gold Bug'. The color will vary considerably during different times of the year, but right now they're just glowing with color. We will be offering these at the June sale of the Oregon Cactus & Succulent Society and on line.
