Growing roots

I've often said that we're in the business of growing roots. This is what I mean:

    I had no idea the tap root grew to that length. I wonder if it is a species characteristic, or the genus characteristic.

    The individual plants vary a lot. This is a H. splendens grown from seed collected by David Martin. H. truncats almost always has a significant tap root.

    Oops! That should have been H. truncata!
